Space at Heritage Aviation BETA establishes its first official workspace at Heritage Aviation in Burlington, Vermont. The early team begins building, testing, and flying in a shared hangar—laying the foundation for the company’s hands-on, pilot-driven approach to electric aviation.

Meet AVA Designed, built, tested, and flown within ten months by a handful of engineers, AVA was BETA’s first full-scale proof-of-concept (PoC) aircraft. AVA set a record as the heaviest eVTOL aircraft in the world to take flight. This design proved that electric aviation is possible, laying the foundation for the company to build on with future designs.
BETA’s Flight Training Program Begins BETA offers every team member the opportunity to earn a pilot’s license. Flight school connects employees to the mission—giving them a common language, a deeper understanding of what they are designing, and a meaningful empathy for future operators. The program now includes a large team of flight instructors and a fleet of training aircraft, enabling training from a Private Pilot Certificate all the way up to an ATP.

BETA establishes its flight test headquarters at Plattsburgh International Airport (KPBG)— just a 15-minute flight from the company’s R&D facility in South Burlington. Once home to B-52 bombers, the former Air Force base offers expansive hangar space, more than three miles of runway, and a supportive local community—making it the ideal location for BETA’s growing flight test program.

BETA Installs its First Prototype
Elevated Landing Pad and Pilot Station A crane positions the flight deck atop BETA’s first custom-built elevated landing pad. Constructed from recycled shipping containers and designed to operate off the grid, the pad offers a flexible solution for customers planning to use ALIA at off-airport locations such as distribution centers, office buildings, or hospitals. The structure includes modular spaces for crew rest, pilot briefings, energy storage, and more.

BETA’s First
Full-Scale Simulator BETA’s first full-scale enclosed-dome simulator—ThunderDome—became an invaluable tool for flight testing, data collection, and pilot training. Every company test pilot flies full mission profiles in the simulator before replicating the same flight in the manned aircraft. Data from simulated flights informs software development across multiple systems, and the simulator itself runs in part on the popular home-simulation software X-Plane.

BETA’s First
Employee on Four Legs Whiskey is a nine-year-old Jack Russell Terrier who enjoys short walks on the beach and long days in the hangar. Ninety percent of his waking hours have been spent on the job providing moral support. He runs on three legs and loves baby carrots. Soon, he’ll be airborne—getting fitted for a Stearman harness so he can enjoy loops and rolls with his dad.

Tethered Hover Testing Following the first full build of ALIA, SN1 became BETA’s second full-scale aircraft—after AVA—to begin hover testing. The tethered test campaign, launched in 2020, marked a key milestone in validating ALIA’s electric propulsion and control systems.

Program is Launched BETA Eats is a lunch program created to provide team members with nourishing meals while fostering efficiency and collaboration throughout the workday. The program operates five days a week and strives to use locally sourced, organic ingredients whenever possible.

The authorization allows BETA and the Air Force to conduct experimental flight tests of the company’s electric aircraft together.

BETA Builds “MobileDome” Simulator BETA’s MobileDome is a state-of-the-art mobile flight training and demonstration platform that replicates the experience of flying the all-electric ALIA aircraft. Built into a 2013 Airstream Classic trailer, the simulator features two independent experiences: a traditional full-scale dome and a seat equipped with virtual reality goggles. ALIA SN2 Hover ALIA SN2 became BETA’s third full-scale aircraft to achieve hover. Lessons from AVA and ALIA SN1 informed improvements to the motors, flight controllers, and test procedures used throughout this campaign.
ALIA Completes 2,400+
Mile Cross-Country Mission ALIA flew through seven states, stopping to charge on BETA’s own network of charging infrastructure on its way to Bentonville, Arkansas. The aircraft successfully navigated the National Airspace System (NAS), real-world weather conditions, and a series of unfamiliar airports. Along the route, ALIA landed at several partner facilities, including Amazon’s fulfillment center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and UPS Worldport in Louisville, Kentucky. On the final leg of the journey, ALIA completed her longest flight yet—293 miles nonstop. 
Manufacturing Facility Sunrise-1
BETA Breaks Ground on Net-Zero Manufacturing Facility BETA broke ground on the first phase of its 375,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at the south end of Runway 33 at Burlington International Airport. The facility will produce and assemble BETA’s all-electric aircraft and, upon completion, will be the largest net-zero manufacturing site east of the Mississippi. The full campus buildout will include community spaces alongside the dedicated manufacturing floor.
U.S. Army Flies ALIA The U.S. Army conducted its first crewed flight of an electric aircraft by flying ALIA. Similar to BETA’s other qualification evaluations, the flights followed an extensive ground training program that included aircraft systems coursework and dedicated simulator sessions.

Young Eagles Day at BETA EAA Chapter 613 hosted a Young Eagles Rally at Burlington International Airport, where 104 students took to the skies. The EAA Young Eagles program provides free flights for youth ages 8–17, and this event focused on inspiring girls with an interest in aviation.

Battery Drop Test BETA, in partnership with the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) and the FAA, conducted a 50-foot drop test on a full-scale battery system designed for electric aircraft. The BETA-designed pack absorbed the impact with no significant damage at either the cell or pack level—successfully completing the intended means of compliance for battery system safety.

336-Nautical-Mile Flight Flying from Jamestown, NY, to Plattsburgh, NY, ALIA completed her longest nonstop, battery-powered flight to date. Covering 336 nautical miles, it is believed to be the longest flight ever achieved by an electric aircraft.
